The primary objective of the Leather Working Group is to develop and maintain a protocol that assesses environmental compliance and business practices regarding sustainability in the leather industry. 

Also known as the Marine Equipment Directive (MED), it establishes safety and performance criteria for equipment on board ships sailing in international waters, ensuring uniform standards for maritime safety in the EU.

This is an independent and globally recognised certification system for leather and leather goods at all stages of their processing, from semi-finished leather to finished articles such as bags, gloves, clothing, etc.  
The certification applies to the leather production process and identifies substances that are used in the processing that are harmful to humans.
